The Maid of Honour’s speech

I was blessed to be asked to be the Maid of Honour at the wedding of two great friends of mine. The wedding preparations were frustrating at times, but the end result was beautiful. At a private gathering of the friends and family who couldn’t all make it to the “big” wedding, we had a ceremony and I was asked to make a speech and toast the bride and groom. As usual, I put on paper what was in my heart… here it is:

Beloved Anél and Shane,

We have watched you grow and hold your hands on this journey you embark on now. Everything we do has an added dimension of significance and the road that lies before you will be challenging, otherwise you’re not doing it right :-) But now you have an extra pair of ears, strong shoulders, kind eyes, soft hearts, open arms and willing feet and an extra problem-solving mind and ancient soul to make the journey easier and the storms you will face more bearable. Remember that you are two parts of a whole, united in harmony and joy that has the power to overlook and overcome circumstance.

The greatest blessing that I can wish for your marriage is that you may share a bond similar to the one shared by GM and LJ*. May you, 35 years from now, adore each other even more than you do today, speak without words, be an example to others and walk humbly beside each other as one before God and men. May praises to God always be on your lips and a blessing to God and His people preside over all you undertake. May wisdom grow to be your companion in all things and teach you to grow together, but give each other the space to be who you are and live up to the immense potential energy of who you can become, individually and together. May you never forget that you are intimately enmeshed with each other, with each of us and with the Sovereign Creator God and that your thoughts have the power to change your experiences, your circumstances and your lives beyond what you can conceive.

Above all, although each of our quests for balance is unique and imperfect, may you find the true balance between heaven and earth. And so, from earthly words to heavenly ones… May the Almighty God bless you and keep you. May He make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. And may He lift up His countenance upon you and give you His peace.**
